While London is a city that never sleeps, finding the best things to do on a Sunday night can require a little insider knowledge; some of the most interesting, quirky or unusual activities lie off the beaten track. It's certainly worth delving a little deeper, because Sunday evenings might reveal London at its best - crowds are smaller, lines are shorter and tickets can be cheaper. For the savvy traveler to the U.K.'s capital, Sunday is the new Saturday.

Theater

A trip to London isn’t complete without a visit to "Theaterland, " the city's theatrical and performance hub situated around Shaftesbury Avenue. Luckily, many of the larger theaters stage Sunday evening performances, which generally have better availability and seat choice and can be cheaper. In Central London, The Lyric, Prince Edward’s and Ambassadors theaters frequently show musicals and plays starting around 7 p.m., while a short ride on the subway brings you to the Brixton Club House - take the Victoria Line (light blue) from Oxford Circus to Brixton. Buy tickets in advance online at boxoffice.co.uk and never from someone selling tickets on the street, as these will be hugely overpriced, not to mention illegal.

Bars and Clubs

A number of London clubs host Sunday club nights catering to a range of music tastes. Popular with hard-core ravers and students, Cable (cable-london.com) is tucked away beneath the arches of London Bridge and features two rooms and a large smoking terrace. A clubbers’ temple dedicated to house, dubstep and techno, this is not for the faint-hearted. Sunday times vary, so check the website in advance. If you fancy a drink but don’t want to destroy yourself, the delightful Book Club (wearetbc.com) over in Shoreditch, a trendy district in East London, is open until midnight and attracts an artsy, hipster crowd. Sunday is In keeping with their aim of facilitating "a cultural revolution, " this large and attractive bar hosts workshops and cultural events, has table tennis and a pool table and is open until noon every Sunday. Be aware that the subway, known as the London Underground or "tube, " closes earlier than usual on Sundays, at around 11 p.m.

Comedy

Sunday is known as "Comedy Night" in London, when locals flock to several leading venues to see acclaimed British and international comedians. Most famous is the much-loved Comedy Store (thecomedystore.co.uk) in Piccadilly, which regularly features comedic heavyweights performing stand-up or improv. Shows start around 7:30 p.m. and booking ahead is usually necessary. Not to be outdone is The 99 Club (99clubcomedy.com), which has five venues in the center, guaranteeing a plethora of giggles any night of the week. Booking is advised, although walk-ins might be lucky for less well-known performers.
